Foundation of Mortal Discord: Mother-Father vs mother-father

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

“[A]nd his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold,
thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?

And they understood not the saying …”

“The foundation of mortal discord is a false sense of man’s origin” (SH 262).

The word “mother” is derived from the Latin “mater,” meaning “origin, source, mother” from which is also derived “matter.”

Thus, the more appropriate term for Mother’s Day is: Matter’s Day.

    Father’s Day, as well.

Thank you! Mrs. Evans maintained that Mother’s Day is the worst holiday of all because it perpetuated the prevalent belief that man is born into matter and will die out of it. This, however, does not mean we throw our earthly mother or any relative, for that matter, out the door! We can impersonalize all the good they do and have expressed and realize it came and comes from our true heavenly Father-Mother God. Mrs. Eddy was extremely fond and grateful for her mother for she expressed Christly love and compassion. Understanding God is the Father and Mother of all enriches our love for all our relationships by keeping God in the middle of it – otherwise it can fall into the trap of human love and human manipulation, human resentment and human ownership, and all the other etcetera’s of the Adam dream. As was sung by Faith and Jon on Sunday we must simply learn to “rise above the mist.”!
