Jerusalem and New Jerusalem

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

“I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy.” (Isaiah 65:18)

In Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy defines Jerusalem as: “Mortal belief and knowledge obtained from the five corporeal senses; the pride of power and the power of pride; sensuality; envy; oppression; tyranny. Home, heaven.” (589:122-15) The last part of this definition is the Jerusalem that God created; but the first part is the “mist that went up from the earth,” mortal mind’s view of all things.

However this Lesson ends with “renew a right spirit within me,” and “be renewed in the spirit of your mind.” This renewal is the “New Jerusalem” defined in Science and Health as: “Divine Science; the spiritual facts and harmony of the universe; the kingdom of heaven, or reign of harmony.” (592:18-20) This is the renewal for us all when we come into Christian Science and learn the Truth, the spiritual facts of being. This is our true home and birthright.
