The cross

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

    In Matthew 16:24 Jesus said, “If any man will come after me let him deny himself and take up his cross, and follow me.”
    In Mark 10:21 he said, “and come take up the cross and follow me.”
    This mentioning of taking up the cross is done before he was crucified. I was wondering if the hearers understood what Christ was saying as we interpret “taking up the cross” today.

    What do you think Jesus meant? What does it mean to you today? A lot of people go around wearing a cross on their necklace. What’s that all about?

    I wonder if taking up one´s cross was a common saying in Jesus´ days. Or was it added after the crucifixion, as the gospels date from several decades later. But the intention of Christ´s words is clear, “self-renunciation of all that constitutes a so-called material man.” The yielding of mortal mind to the divine Mind, of this sense of false selfhood to our real, eternal identity. Sometimes it seems more than I can handle!
