John 20:15-17

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

    When I first read this exchange between Jesus and Simon Peter it made no sense to me. In class I did learn to go back to the original Hebrew and Greek for greater clarification and learned there are different meanings of the word ‘love’ as used in our KJV Bible. Here is the best translation I could find in Biblehub;

    John 21:15
    When therefore they had dined, says- to Simon Peter- Jesus, Simon Peter (son) of Jonah, love (agapas) you me more than these? He says to him, yes, Lord; you know I have affection (philo) for you. He says to him, feed the lambs of me.

    John 21:16
    He says again to him a second time, Simon (son) of Jonah, love you me? He says to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I have affection for you. He says to him, Shepherd the sheep of me.

    John 21:17
    He says to him the third time, Simon (son) of Jonah, have you affection for me? Was grieved-Peter because he said to him the third time, have you affection for me? And said to him, Lord, all things you know; you know that I have affection for you. Says to him- Jesus, Feed the sheep of me.

    I also was not clear on why Jesus switched from ‘lamb’ to ‘sheep’ and recently found Mrs. Eddy’s explanation; ‘lamb’ is the Real, Spiritual man and ‘sheep’ is a good human.
