wicked motives

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

“Lust, malice, and all sorts of evil are diseased beliefs, and you can destroy them only by destroying the wicked motives which produce them.” Science and Health

I am grateful for how our Bible lessons bring light and understanding to this practical Science. Before this lesson I took sins such as lust, malice, dishonesty, etc. at face value. By that I mean I saw something exactly the way it appeared rather than what it could be masking. This ignorance led to the thought I could use human will to rid myself of sin. Yet here Mrs. Eddy says we have to destroy “the wicked motives which produce them.” I now realize I must go deeper to see what is behind these acts and desires. One size doesn’t fit all. I can see why honesty is so important to this work so we can face these errors in thought and cultivate true Spiritual thinking. In the past when I was using new age reading material I found it gave me a false sense of peace. Rather than helping me recognize sin, repent, and change, it was allowing sin to go unchallenged and grow. The new age reading material and the teachers who focused only on the pleasant words allowed me to drift along away from God while I thought I was being spiritual. I am now addressing the years of deception by repairing the damage, and retracing my steps. Despite this I would not replace the old for the cleansing and honesty. It is also helping me be more compassionate and not self righteous. The sin that I was covering, ignoring, and excusing never was destroyed in the old way because this can only be done by the Christ. I am grateful for the clear Biblical Science of Christ lived and taught here.
