Mortify the Deeds of the Body

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

I found this paragraph from the following article a powerfully worded explanation of the meaning of ‘mortify the deeds of the body.’ (Rom. 8:13)

THE RELIGIOUS CHARACTER OF CHRISTIAN SCIENCE Fonda, Jesse L.
    The Christian Science Journal |Vol. 20 No. 2 |May 1902
In most of the common thinking the effort is made to hold the sense of God in the sense of matter; but that is a contradiction, and kills all real godliness. In metaphysics the idea controls; God can be the creator of ideas only and not of any such thing as the apostle characterizes matter to be. He also says, “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. . . . For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of
the body, ye shall live” (Romans, 8 :9, 13). This entirely cuts matter off from any connection with God. Man has no relation to it in his character as the idea of God, His likeness and image.

Here is another excerpt that also helped me understand aligned with what is taught here in the Plainfield church with respect to the All-ness of God and the nothingness of matter that has been difficult to break free from (in my belief only:) I’m grateful for the raised awareness brought out here because before coming to Plainfield I didn’t even know I had to be working on this issue!!:) Thanks to all the ‘services’ provided here and of course the clear, correctness, of all writings of Christian Science were under Mrs. Eddy’s watchful eye!!

The Body of Man by WILLIAM H. JENNINGS CSS June 6, 1903
The mortal body is spoken of in Scripture as a “vision,” “dream,” “shadow;” as “stubble,” “tares,” and a vanishing “vapor.” …….. As to the mortal body and life, Jesus said, “Take no thought for your life, . . . neither for the body,” etc. We understand that mortal bodies are counterfeits, fathered by mortal mind, the carnal mind, the one evil or devil, the adversary of all truth, the denier of all good, and the enemy of all life. Yet by the infinity of God this accursed accuser of the brethren and all its false accusations against God and man, is reduced to nothingness; and God and the spiritual man stand forth forever entirely separate and apart from, the sinning sons of Adam, the tares which never were and never will be wheat, the lies which never will be true. In the eternal and unchanging truth of being, what shall be is true now. Ideals or types that shall be spiritual are already spiritual, and the seeming negations or antitypes of man have no reality, since God is “All-in-all,” and there is no place found in infinite good for even finite evil. Christian Scientists are therefore “of good cheer: the night is far spent, the day dawns; God’s universal kingdom will appear, Love will reign in every heart, and His will be done on earth as in heaven” (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 213).
