"Yielded up the ghost"

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

    6. Matthew 27:50-53
“Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.”

Christ Jesus demonstrated the absolute “omnipotence, omnipresence and omniscience” (SH275:22) of Divine Love. I am so moved by the lesson this week on “Unreality.” I have to pause and really think about this citation. The power of Divine Love and what Christ Jesus sacrificed and did for our sakes.
Thank you for this powerful lesson!

“In the record of Jesus’ supposed death, we read: ‘He bowed his head, and gave up the ghost;’ but this word ghost is pneuma. It might be translated wind or air, and the phrase is equivalent to our common statement, ‘He breathed his last.’ What Jesus gave up was indeed air, an etherealized form of matter, for never did he give up Spirit or Soul.” (“Science And Health With Key To The Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy 598:10-16)

In Strong’s Concordance the word pneuma, Greek translation, comes up when the word ‘spirit’ is used, all but 2 times in the New Testament. Some of the definition is: spirit, rational soul, divine principle, an angel, God, Christ’s spirit, the Holy Spirit, mind. So quoting Mrs. Eddy S&H 598:10-16 is the perfect illustration of that. Thank you very much!!
