The centurion's business

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

    6. Matthew 8
7 And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.
8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.
9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

Today I realized that the centurion was willing and able to delegate a great many things to others, and yet for this he felt the importance to go himself to Jesus. I have heard it said that companies can buy things from other companies, but whatever their actual business is, they must do themselves. This centurion knew that his actual business was the care of those he was entrusted with, and in this he was very faithful.

When I first came to the church, I said “yes” to everything that was asked of me, but in time I began to understand that in order to be faithful to what God has given me to do, I must be more discerning. Saying either “yes” or “no” at the right time is obedience, and at the wrong time is telling God I know better, which has not once worked out.

I am grateful to find that my actual business is to “be about my Father’s business,” (Luke 2:49) and to be learning more each day about how to be faithful in that work. It is such a blessing to be able to hone my spiritual sense with all the help of this church, these lessons, and practitioner support! I had no idea when I first arrived in Plainfield that I would be learning so much, and that it all would be practical and applicable to the entirety of my daily life. Thank you!
