wash one another’s feet

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

“If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.” John 13

Edward Kimball writes in Teaching and Addresses p. 142, “Ask, ‘How would I like my brother to do this or that to me?’ Find the way to the art of loving. Christian Scientists must not make much ado about little things.”

I have been thinking about Jesus washing the feet of the disciples. In Luke we read that during this meal the disciples had been arguing about who was greatest. Jesus even washed the feet of Judas before he sent him off knowing he was to betray him. At no time did Jesus compare the amount of dirt, or judge the kind of dirt on their feet or complain their feet were dirty. They all needed their feet washed, most likely especially during that difficult time. Jesus’ actions and words were a rebuke to petty arguments, judgmental thinking , and busy distraction that overlooks the need but it was also such a deep message about love they needed to sustain their coming work when he was no longer them. It is interesting that this is only recored by John who later wrote, “love one another”. Mrs. Eddy exemplified this in her life as Carpenter brings out well in his works. I am very grateful for the many times I have felt washed over by love with its healing effects by those living the Christ love at this church always at a time when I felt I had come with dirty feet. It has come in many forms such as a kind remark, encouragement, joke, singing, sharing and sometimes in just a smile.
