"Unknown gods"

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

According to Dummelow’s Commentary, the people of Athens were very superstitious and believed in so many gods, with altars to worship them scattered throughout the city, to the point that they even worshiped ‘unknown gods’ to be on the ‘safe side.’ During an epidemic their ruler let loose black and white sheep which the citizens were commanded to sacrifice at the altar of a god where the sheep had laid down. If the sheep had laid down in a place where there was not a known god, the citizens raised an alter and labeled it as ‘for an unknown god!’

It is so much easier to worship God who we are taught to understand through Christian Science and then be able to demonstrate the good that comes through Him. I definitely was an atheist because my ‘prayer’ had no Truth behind it so was completely ineffectual. Very grateful for the Christian Science teachings that is Life and Love rather than empty superstition!
