a virtuous woman

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

I have loved this passage for many years. I had no idea how to make it practical until I came to Plainfield and began to be taught Christian Science correctly. A virtuous woman to me is correctly aligning one’s thinking and actions with God.

Below are verses from Proverbs 31 and what they mean to me:

Her price is far above rubies (being close to God is the pearl of great price)
Safely trust in her (honesty and consistency is important)
No need of spoil (we don’t waste what God gives us)
Do good and not evil (what is my motive)
All the days of her life (not giving in or giving up no matter what)
Worketh willingly with her hands (willingness to work)
She riseth also while it is yet night (ready to work for God at all times)
And strengtheneth her arms (wait on God to renew our strength)
Her candle goeth not out by night (works to keep oil of inspiration)
She reacheth forth her hands to the needy (unselfed giving)
She is not afraid (works on ridding fear from thought)
Her husband is known in the gates (a life that is witness to God)
She maketh fine linen, and selleth it (puts forth best work)
Strength and honour are her clothing (takes care of what we have)
She shall rejoice in time to come (keep joy and gratitude)
Openeth mouth with wisdom (obedience to God’s precepts)
And in her tongue is the law of kindness (what I say reflects my thoughts)
Looketh well to the ways of her household (watches thought)
Eateth not the bread of idleness (alert to apathy)
Feareth the Lord (waiting on God)

“When we wait patiently on God and seek Truth righteously, He directs our path.” Mary Baker Eddy

THANKS FOR THIS POST:) The first time I read this from Proverbs, “Her price is far above rubies,” even though not understanding the Bible very well I thought; “This represents Mary Baker Eddy.” This post just makes me feel that sentiment more strongly!!

Virtue also appears in conjunction with major healings by Christ Jesus so I looked up the definition in Strong’s KJV Concordance:

virtue dunamis: (miraculous) power, might, strength
Definition: (a) physical power, force, might, ability, efficacy, energy, meaning (b) plur: powerful deeds, deeds showing (physical) power, marvelous works.
