Addressing the receptive heart

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

    3. John 8
13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.
14 Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: …
30 As he spake these words, many believed on him.

Since arriving in Plainfield, I’ve been fascinated to see how Christ Jesus was never just having conversations, but was actively addressing and healing the underlying thought. Most of the time he would circumvent foolish questions to get to the root of the issue. Yet, these verses show Jesus directly answering the Pharisees’ question. In working out the difference, the following two verses from Proverbs came to mind, and helped me understand a little more.

“Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.” – Proverbs 26:4

The “authorities” who came to him also weren’t interested in a conversation, as they typically went straight to accusation. Their only interest was to tear down any threat to their own power. Jesus knew it was foolish to answer a reaction with yet another reaction, especially considering their supposed power had no basis in God, and therefore no basis at all.

“Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.” – Proverbs 26:5

Using the Pharisees’ faulty logic as a starting point, he leads up toward the truth of his mission and the God-given authority for it. But why answer their question in this instance? Receptive hearts were listening, and his whole explanation was for them, to show them the way.

This reminded me of two things that Mrs. Eddy wrote: The first from page 452 of Science and Health, “Never breathe an immoral atmosphere, unless in the attempt to purify it.” The second, from page 267 of Miscellaneous Writings, “…there never was a time when I saw an opportunity really to help them and failed to improve it;” Christ Jesus certainly did both of those in every instance!

I am very grateful for these lessons, and all the teaching at this church, which brings more understanding each day. Thank you!
