Biblical scholarship – History and Inspired Overlay

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

Studying the Bible in an historical context only gets one so far. To really understand the meaning of the Scriptures, one has to apply a spiritual overlay on top of that history. The verse from II Timothy 3:16 describes that overlay. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”

Mrs. Eddy states in Science and Health, “1. As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life.” (Science and Health, page 497) I am so grateful to see and be instructed by this overlay of Truth, which appears throughout the Bible, so “That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” (II Timothy 3:17)
