"Blessed is he…"

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

“And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.” (Matt. 11:6)

When I first came to Plainfield Church, and Christian Science, I heard many strong statements of Truth from the practitioner and teacher. Often these statements offended me — but they were always the Truth. They were hard to take, because there was something in my thinking that needed to be healed. So, I went home and wrestled with them, much like Jacob, until they blessed me. And this blessing goes on, as long as one is receptive. For Christ, Truth always will bless when it is taken to heart and accepted.

    Thank for this post.

    From the NIV translation:
“And he added, “God blesses those who do not fall away because of me.” (Strong’s Greek 4624: to entrap, i.e. Trip up or entice to sin, apostasy or displeasure)

    Amplified Bible:
“And blessed [joyful, favored by God] is he who does not take offense at Me [accepting Me as the Messiah and trusting confidently in My message of salvation].”

    Contemporary English Version:
“God will bless everyone who doesn’t reject me because of what I do.”

    Pulpit Commentary:
“Verse 6. – And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended (Matthew 5:29, note) in me; shall find none occasion of stumbling in me (Revised Version). But exhibits perfect trust under delay and disappointment (James 1:12).”

Peter while very imperfect was a model of not turning away although receiving fierce rebukes, falling away, not always understanding what Jesus meant, and making mistakes. He also was the one who responded to Jesus’ question whether they would leave like the others, “Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.” This speaks to me of keeping the fire burning and the spirit alive in our hearts. His response feels like gratitude to me for he must be thinking of all he has seen, felt, and heard. Thank you Lesson writers.
