call no man your father upon the earth

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

Mrs. Eddy has clearly explained how the thought of the parent should be disconnected from that of the child for the good of the child. The following is an excerpt from an article in Collectanea on page 167:

β€œTo successfully treat children, cut off the parent thought. Man is the offspring of God, not man. The material birth is but the false conception. Realize that matter cannot transmit good or evil. It is inert, unintelligent, and cannot be the medium of intelligence. Seedless oranges are produced by turning the top of the parent plant back to earth, and when rooted disconnecting it. The offspring produces seedless oranges. Detach the thought of the child from the parent and the germs of erroneous seed of the parent thought will cease to impress the child.”

    Thank you, Bruce.
This is very helpful. Just the other day, I shared the truths about God and Christian Science with a friend and her child who is having some issues and fear is definitely in the mom’s thought. Understanding to “cut off the parent thought” makes all the difference in my prayers for them and for me to know the Truth of all God’s children as his individual reflex image of himself without influence from anything else. Eternal Love and goodness permeates all and is all Life!

    Thank you for this post.

Thank you Bruce for the above commentary. This is very helpful when dealing with the fears and concerns relating to our children or family members. This is very useful to apply and to know as we go about our daily business. Thank you. I have the book Collectanea and will definitely earmark the paragraph above. Thanks.

Royce in TX asked me to submit this for her:

She found the word “detach” in Science and Health twice, and wanted to share the verses.

On page 463, with the heading “Scientific Obstetrics”:

To attend properly the birth of the new child, or divine idea, you should so detach mortal thought from its material conceptions, that the birth will be natural and safe.

    Then on page 261:

Detach sense from the body, or matter, which is only a form of human belief, and you may learn the meaning of God, or good, and the nature of the immutable and immortal.
