Definitions – Golden Text

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

    “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” – Golden Text – Heb 11:1.

    After looking up several of the words in the Golden Text (“faith,” “substance,” “hoped for,” “evidence,” and “seen”) in the original Greek, via Strong’s Concordance, this Bible verse, expanded, became:

    [Faith] Conviction of the truth, moral conviction of the truthfulness of God; reliance upon Christ for salvation; the conviction that God exists and is the creator and ruler of all things, the provider and bestower of eternal salvation through Christ; the confident assurance, warranty, guarantee of God’s will for us (a gift from God that is wrought in us by the Holy Spirit) is the [substance] substructure, firm foundation of actual existence and real being; steadfastness of mind, firmness, courage, resolution, confidence, firm trust, and assurance; support, steadiness, reality of things [hoped for] expected, trusted, actively waited for, the [evidence] proof, inner conviction of things not [seen] with the bodily eye, not understood, not perceived, not mentally discerned.
