"Enlarge the place of thy tent."

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

“Faith should enlarge its borders and strengthen its base by resting upon Spirit instead of matter.” from Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, page 429

In Isaiah 54:2 is reads, “Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes;”

    Pulpit Commentary
“The memory of the old nomadic life caused the “tent” to be the symbol and representative of the dwelling-place. Israel will have so many more children that her “tent” will need enlarging. … The enlargement of the tent would make longer ropes and larger pegs necessary.”

    From Webster’s 1828 online Dictionary:
Faith: [Latin – to trust; Greek – to draw towards any thing, and thus to bind or make fast; to believe, to obey) [A rope or cable is that which makes fast. Heb.]

This reminded me of a line in the Blue Book, page 104, “Student: I am ready to obey when I understand. Mrs. Eddy: Be ready to obey before you understand.”

As we have been taught here faith is directly connected to being obedient to God. Science and Health teaches all how to rest, “… upon Spirit instead of matter.” So part of this obedience is to practice what we are taught step by step, precept by precept. Not just read or repeat words; which I did frequently and is why I had so little faith in the things of God before coming here and receiving the correct learning of how Mrs. Eddy intended this Science to be daily practiced.
