Faith

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

While looking for more information on the Golden Text, I found this wonderful explanation of faith by Matthew Henry-
“Faith proves to the mind, the reality of things that cannot be seen by the bodily eye. It is a full approval of all God has revealed, as holy, just, and good.”

I also like what Ames Nowell C.S.B writes in his book Mary Baker Eddy Her Revelation of Divine Egoism about our Golden Text,
“Beautiful as this language may be, it is extremely difficult to understand Paul’s intended meaning, -not because Paul had failed to state his case correctly, but because the translators had failed to give the full and proper significance to this passage as written in the original Greek text…… there are two entirely different words, both translated as “things”, but had quite different meanings. Following the language of this epistle as actually written by Paul, we find it means: ‘Now faith is a mental realizing of things hoped for, a detection of things already fulfilled, not being seen by the bodily eye’….it is in complete agreement with the fundamental teaching of Christian Science that calls for the acknowledgement of good as already established, and present, — not something to be hoped for in an indeterminate future time.”

There is so much ‘substance’ in this lesson on substance. Thank you!!
