"Formidable in truth…"

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

“The understanding of his spiritual individuality makes man more real, more formidable in truth, and enables him to conquer sin, disease, and death.” (S&H, cit. #4)

Webster (1828) defines “formidable” as “exciting fear; impressing dread;” that is, deterring anything from even approaching.

This citation from S&H also ties in with Mrs. Eddy’s article on “Age” where she writes: “Ponder in thought your infinite harmonious Christ-expressing selfhood, and claim it as you….Drink in its unspeakable safety….discard all your false sense of selfhood, all that is involved in the beliefs of birth, heredity, association, time, decay, death.”

I am grateful to have known — and also currently know — practitioners in the Plainfield Church who are formidable in truth. My prayer is to understand my spiritual individuality — my true selfhood as a child of God — and live it more and more, so I will be formidable to any false belief that even tries to approach my thought.

What wonderful truth Mrs. Eddy has given us! Thank you for this powerful Lesson!
