Gehazi and material wealth

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

In reading the story of Naaman’s healing I was reminded of what Elisha’s servant Gehazi did just after the healing occurred, II Kings 5:20-27. Apparently lusting after some of the material reward Elisha had absolutely refused, he lied to both Naaman to obtain silver and changes of garments and then to Elisha about having done it. He paid a very high price. Clearly he didn’t know either God or Elisha, who he couldn’t fool, very well.
Somewhat related is how careful we must be not to fall into the error of looking to God’s law to make us materially rich, to be as clear as we can that being is spiritual, and how necessary to seek the spiritual meaning of truths such as the scripture from this week’s lesson, “Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks,” Job 22:24, which may mean something like you shall have all you need every moment.

I’d like to add that the prophet discerned that it was too holy an occasion to receive material gifts, II Kings 5:26.

Looks like I missed the point here. To hear a discussion as to why Elisha chose not to accept anything from Naaman listen to today’s (4-10-2016) Roundtable.
