Go in peace

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

“Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: … And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.” Luke 7

Here we see, “a woman in the city” found Jesus and was told “go in peace” from the Christ. I thought about the faith that saved her. She had faith enough to know where salvation was to be found and it was not with the self-righteous Pharisees or the world she turned from. She had faith to see a difference in Jesus’ teachings. She had faith to use costly fragrant oil for his feet. She had faith to persist through obstacles. She had enough faith to be open with her reverence despite the condemnation of those around her. She was honest and did not try to hide her sin. She had faith to go forward even though there were challenges in order to be healed. She had faith to come for help, to stay, learn and continue to grow as a follower of Jesus during his ministry on earth. She was, “to behold at the sepulchre the risen Saviour.” I am sure she continued afterward and there is a partial gospel attributed to her.

God speaks to us through these Weekly Lessons and is providing us three in a row; each with a message of forgiveness, redemption, and salvation. First the prodigal son last week, this week Mary Magdalene and next week the story of a woman taken in adultery. It made me pause to make sure I am taking this in since there are no coincidences the teaching here and the Lesson writers do not organize them humanly. Thank you Lesson writers.

Chapter 12 of Christian Science Practice in Science and Health begins with this beautiful story. Here Mrs. Eddy writes on page 363, “She bathed his feet with her tears before she anointed them with the oil. In the absence of other proofs, was her grief sufficient evidence to warrant the expectation of her repentance, reformation, and growth in wisdom? Certainly there was encouragement in the mere fact that she was showing her affection for a man of undoubted goodness and purity, who has since been rightfully regarded as the best man that ever trod this planet. Her reverence was unfeigned, and it was manifested towards one who was soon, though they knew it not, to lay down his mortal existence in behalf of all sinners, that through his word and works they might be redeemed from sensuality and sin.”
