Human weakness = God’s strength

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

“God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect” (II Samuel 22:33 – Lesson citation #5)

The phrase “Agree with thine adversary quickly…” (Matt 5:25 and S & H: 390:18) confused me for a long time. During the Bible Study this morning, something was said that suddenly made it much more clear. It was stated that whenever mortal mind tries to tell you that “You can’t do this – it’s too hard for you,” you can quickly “agree with thine adversary” (mortal mind) and immediately turn the erroneous suggestion around by declaring, “You’re right. I can’t do it. But, God can!” Then, getting self out of the way, giving it up to God, and letting God use you, the answer comes. Thus, we can use weakness to our favor – i.e. make strength out of weakness.

This statement by Mrs. Eddy in “The Blue Book” summarizes this process exactly: “When we realize our own helplessness as mortals, then ‘His strength is made perfect in weakness’; we look up to divine Love and Love meets the need” (p. 218).
