Meaning of bloodguiltiness

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

    Regarding this week’s Responsive Reading, “Deliver me from bloodguiltiness …” (Psalm 51:14), I found this interesting interpretation of bloodguiltiness, per International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, “Found in the King James Version only…seems to indicate that the phrase does not necessarily signify bloodshed, but any grievous sin which, if it remains, will block God’s favor to His land and people.” That certainly gives me more to work with.

    Thank you for this post!

    The word “bloodguiltiness” struck me as well this week, and because of what I am learning in Plainfield, it made me think of all the warnings to handle heredity and family issues. “Deliver me from bloodguiltiness…” feels like something I prayed before, even when I didn’t realize it.

    What a blessing Christian Science is, as nothing else shows us the real meaning of Father, Mother, brother, sister, family, blood, etc.

    A few excerpts from what this church has made available shows that the real idea of blood is nothing to be guilty about, but rather joyous and grateful for.

    From Watches, Prayers, and Arguments, given by Mary Baker Eddy, page 51:
    WATCH — Blood is thought, and your blood is pure thought, a health-giving, life-giving thought, and nothing impure can enter into that thought; it is perfectly pure.

    From 1936 Primary Class, by Bicknell Young, page 111:
    Question (by student): Is blood an idea?
    Answer: Blood is the idea of Life. The claim that blood is a thing, is a false claim. Life is the only thing. The idea, then, is that Life is and is perfect.

    Acts 17: 24,26:
    24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
    26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

    Thank you!

    Thank you for your very helpful post. Wow, blood a pure thought. How constantly I find myself needing to be brought back to the spiritual.
