Prayers in the Christian Science churches for the "congregations exclusively"

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

In a chapter entitled Church by Bicknell Young there is the following regarding what led to the bylaw, “Prayer in Church. SECT. 5. The prayers in Christian Science churches shall be offered for the congregations collectively and exclusively.”(Church Manual of The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, Massachusetts, 1910, 88th Edition)

“When we first had the Lessons as they are now, Mrs. Eddy saw there was a great need for every member of the organization to take part in the services. Practitioners used to say they went to church to do their work and to treat their patients during the morning service. Mrs. Eddy did not think that was right, and so she said that the prayers in the Christian Science churches were to be for the congregations exclusively. You are not there to treat your patients; you are there to demonstrate the Lesson. That is your duty and privilege. You have as much to do as the First Reader. The most he can do is to know the Truth, and you shouldn’t do less than that.” from 1937 College by Bicknell Young, page 92
