7. 33
When the human element in him struggled with the divine, our great Teacher said: “Not my will, but Thine, be done!” — that is, Let not the flesh, but the Spirit, be represented in me.
While reading these statements in the lesson today, it occurred to me that my mission is to present and represent the ever-present now and always. It is becoming clearer all the time that doing this brings purpose and joy, and failing to do this brings suffering and misery.
The Roundtable has been giving me a greater appreciation of the Glossary in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, so I looked up the way Mrs. Eddy used present and represent there:
ADAM. … The name Adam represents the false supposition that Life is not eternal, but has beginning and end; …
BAPTISM. Purification by Spirit; submergence in Spirit.
We are “willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” (II Corinthians v. 8.)
CHILDREN. The spiritual thoughts and representatives of Life, Truth, and Love.
CHILDREN OF ISRAEL. The representatives of Soul, not corporeal sense; … Christ’s offspring.
MAN. … the full representation of Mind.
SPIRIT. Divine substance; Mind; divine Principle; all that is good; God; that only which is perfect, everlasting, omnipresent, omnipotent, infinite.
Also, the 1828 Webster’s had a few useful definitions:
Present
4. Now existing, or being at this time; not past or future;
5. Ready at hand;
7. Not absent of mind; not abstracted; attentive.
Represent
3. To exhibit; to show by action;
