proud heart

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

“his(Uzziah the king) heart was lifted up to his destruction.”
“He that is of a proud heart stirreth up strife.”

This was a warning to me that when I operate from the stand point of pride, my heart is lifted up to destruction. I see this pride as personal sense of myself operating without God just as Uzziah took things into his own hands. One of my hooks is being drawn into taking care of others wants. My own person sense of what I think is needed. Today I came across a Bicknell Young’s 1930 association address. The part I read was discussing unselfishness. He stated that sometimes “unselfishness is only self-deception”, this was in context to devoting oneself to the material welfare of others. He goes on to say that “many instances this is mere slavery for all concerned” because those who are helped “by such devotion are held more firmly in their own erroneous beliefs,” and those who “show such devotion are often kept from the activity which would benefit everyone far more.”

He went on to say “…the life of Jesus exemplified true devotion and pure unselfishness”,not duty to what mortal mind called good but “the greatest devotion he could show to the human race, was through, “his full human demonstration of divine power.”

I am grateful for all that is taught here to help us follow the true example of the unselfishness of the Christ.

Thank you for sharing this; am experiencing exactly what is stated in “show such devotion are often kept from the activity which would benefit everyone far more.” on the taking end which shows me that I need to leave others to be guided by God also, especially when it comes to ‘ones’ (God’s) college aged ‘child.’
