Slipping and Drifting

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

    Hebrews 2: 1
“Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.”

This idea of slipping or drifting has been brought out many times at Plainfield, but it bears repeating.

“The words must be rendered, lest possibly we drift away. It is the man that is in danger of being carried along by the current: unless the mind be held closely to the words that God has spoken, it must drift away from them, and from the salvation which they promise.” (Ellicott’s Commentary for English Readers).

Currents: They can be everything from temptations, the love of the world, false doctrine, indifference, dullness, time, false peace, bland denial, focus on work, pleasures, etc.

So, we are instructed and warned to “give heed” (listen and follow) NOW by mooring ourselves to the Truths we are learning by living them daily and hourly – and not drifting into the currents of error, and if we do, work immediately to anchor ourselves back to the Truth.

From S&H: Universal salvation rests on progression and probation, and is unattainable without them. (P. 291)
No final judgment awaits mortals, for the judgment-day of wisdom comes hourly and continually, even the judgment by which mortal man is divested of all material error.
