Story of Zacharias

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

“Every morning and evening sacrifice was made for the whole nation. A burnt offering of a male lamb, one year old, without spot or blemish was offered, together with a meat offering of flour and oil and a drink offering of wine. Before the morning sacrifice and after the evening sacrifice incense was burned on the altar of incense so that, as it were, the sacrifices might go up to God wrapped in an envelope of sweet-smelling incense.” (This is what Zacharias would be doing.)
William Barclay’s Daily Study Bible Luke 1

“…the nobler purposes and wider aims of a life made honest: a life in which the fresh flowers of feeling blossom, and, like the camomile, the more trampled upon, the sweeter the odor they send forth to benefit mankind; a life wherein calm, self-respected thoughts abide in tabernacles of their own, dwelling upon a holy hill, speaking the truth in the heart;”
By Mary Baker Eddy from Miscellaneous Writings p.227

Preparing the the Bible study about Zacharias and Elizabeth and getting a greater sense of their excellence of character made me appreciate even more the importance of my attitude in all I do. I ask myself, “Is what I am doing for the glory of God? Is my activity wrapped in an envelope of sweet-smelling incense and done with sincere love?”

“Abel takes his offering from the firstlings of the flock. A lamb is a more animate form of existence, and more nearly resembles a mind-offering than does Cain’s fruit. Jealous of his brother’s gift, Cain seeks Abel’s life, instead of making his own gift a higher tribute to the Most High. …Had God more respect for the homage bestowed through a gentle animal than for the worship expressed by Cain’s fruit? No; but the lamb was a more spiritual type of even the human concept of Love than the herbs of the ground could be.”
by Mary Baker Eddy from Science and Health p.540-541

We were admonished today in our Bible study on Zacharias and Elizabeth to watch that jealousy not creep into our thinking. Mrs. Eddy teaches that our response should be to make our, “own gift a higher tribute to the Most High.”
