SUBSTANCE = Opportunity to express (give) good

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

The word “give,” in various forms, and as opposed to the word “get,” appears repeatedly in this week’s Lesson-Sermon on “Substance.” And, II Cor 9:7 (Citation 6), reminds us of our Christian duty: “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”

“Life is largely an interchange of appreciations. We give and receive, and give again and receive again, endlessly. All this indicates the purely mental, living, active quality of substance. No one can get substance, to possess it for himself, any more than one can personally possess God. The only way you and I can have substance is to express good in thought and life, for there is no substance save God, good. Substance is not available for personal acquisition or aggrandizement. Substance is what God is, and is found as God is found, through spiritual sense. . . . You and I have constant opportunity – yes, a perpetual duty to God, our brother, and ourselves to express substance, the substance that is Love, Life, Truth, Soul, and Mind, the substance that lives, loves, knows, and acts aright. . . . Let us then daily realize that substance is not something to get and to possess.” (CSS, 2/3/1945 – “Substance Is Ever Active” by Paul Stark Seeley)
