Taught them as one having authority

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

“Beware of false prophets,” Matthew 7, Jesus

It was said at a recent class that Christian Science in not opinion.

“OPINION and BELIEF mean a judgment that someone thinks is true. OPINION is used when the judgment is not yet final or certain.” (Websters online dictionary)

“The opinions of men cannot be substituted for God’s revelation.” Mary Baker Eddy, Misc. p. 92

This hit home because before Plainfield a lot of the Christian Science I experienced I believe would fall into opinion since little of it was practical or lived by “habits of obedience to moral and spiritual law.”(S.&H. p. 62) Instead it was “scholarly”, “intellectual”, rules externally followed (reading the lesson, attending church, etc). So like the pharisees and scribes, it becomes a theory dogma, creed, hypothesis, speculation. I realized if I am not living it, it can only be an opinion because I haven’t proven it.

“Ye shall know them by their fruits.” (Matt. 7) “Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew…” (Matt. 11) “And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.” (Matt. 7)
