The beginning of wisdom – Hate evil/iniquity

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

Prov 9:10 – “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom:. . . “ (Responsive Reading)

Prov 8:13 – “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.”

Therefore, the beginning of wisdom is to hate evil, pride, arrogancy, the evil way, the froward mouth. (“Froward” – 1828 Dictionary: Perverse, that is, turning from, with aversion or reluctance; not willing to yield or comply with what is required; unyielding; ungovernable; refractory; disobedient) .

Heb 1:9 – “Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.”

We Knew Mary Baker Eddy, Vol. 1, p. 297: “Someone said, ‘But, Mother, are we not to discriminate between good and evil?’ She answered substantially as follows: ‘Ah, now you have asked me what is to me the hardest thing in Christian Science! Yes, you must see and denounce evil. The Bible tells us that Jesus was God’s chosen because he loved righteousness, but the Bible does not stop there. It says, “and hated iniquity”! So often have I longed to see and know only Love—only the good—but I have not dared. I must uncover and rebuke and hate iniquity.’ This was very valuable to us all. To her this is the greatest struggle of all, the hardest thing in Science, but when one loves righteousness, one hates iniquity.” (Sue Harper Mims)
