The reality of Love and love

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

When I first started reading the Bible and read this section of John in a lesson, I could see why Peter was a bit vexed that Jesus didn’t understand that Peter did “love” Jesus. After I had been through Christian Science Class and had been taught to use Strong’s KJV Concordance to go back to the original Greek and Hebrew definitions, I did more investigation. Finding that the word ‘love’ in the Bible is used for all the different degrees of love I applied it to this situation and was amazed to find that Jesus didn’t ask the same question three times, Peter simply perceived it that way while it appears to be a question of spiritual Love or human love.

I have inserted the original Greek words into the three verses of John.
From Strong’s Love 25 Agapao; (I feel the best definition) “As God Loves”
love 5368 phileo; (I feel the best definition) be fond of, personal attachment

John 21:15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, Agapao thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I phileo thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, Agapao thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I phileo thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
17He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, phileo thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, phileo thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I phileo thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
