"The Smile of the Great Spirit"

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

When I was a young teenager, I took a road trip with my parent’s and Grandparent’s to some of the New England states. One of the places we visited was Lake Winnipesaukee, in New Hampshire. This lake was called, “The Smile of the Great Spirit” by the Native American Indians who habited the land surrounding this beautiful lake, centuries ago.

I remember sitting along the lake’s shoreline as my mother took numerous pictures of me and this well-known tourist attraction. The lake was crystal clear. It was so clear in fact, that it appeared to be more like a mirror than a lake. I could see my face reflected in the water. I could see the branches of the trees, the clouds and even the tops of the sail boat masts as they sparkled up at me from the water. It was totally breathtaking. I can still remember it quite vividly. It was so serene, almost magical. Those lovely images of God, which were reflected in the water, spoke of the inseparable nature of God. Just as there is no separation between the image of the tree branches, as they leaned over the water, and the one reflected in it, similarly, there is no separation between man and God. We reflect God, spirit in all ways… that includes our thoughts, our words, moments, actions, and all the emanations or reflections of God.

Mary Baker Eddy refers to Lake Winnipesaukee when she explains in S&H that, “The Indians must have caught some glimpse of the underlying reality, when they called a certain beautiful lake “The Smile of the Great Spirit” (P477:26).

Let the smile of God shine on us. May it inspire, and move us. Let God lead all of our moments; because we are Spirit’s inseparable reflection!
