The spirit and power of Elias…

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

Thank you for the inspiring Bible lesson yesterday! I was thinking about what Gabriel told Zacharias about the coming of his son, John:

Luke 1:17 “And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

This led me to the passage in Mark 9:11 when the disciples, after seeing Jesus talking with Elias and Moses on the Mt. of Transfiguration, are questioning Jesus: “Why say the scribes that Elias must first come?

And he answered: 12. “Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought.”

    13. “But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him, whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.”

As I was thinking about this an angel message guided to look up the meaning of Elias in the S&H Glossary.

Elias: Prophecy; spiritual evidence opposed to material sense; Christian Science, with which can be discerned the spiritual fact of whatever the material senses behold; the basis of immortality. “Elias truly shall first come and restore all things. (Matt. xvii.11)”

I’m so grateful to Plainfield for the inspiration to dig deeper into the rich spiritual interpretation of the Bible!
