The test of all prayer.

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

“The test of all prayer lies in the answer to these questions: Do we love our neighbor better because of this asking? Do we pursue the old selfishness, satisfied with having prayed for something better, though we give no evidence of the sincerity of our requests by living consistently with our prayer? If selfishness has given place to kindness, we shall regard our neighbor unselfishly, and bless them that curse us; but we shall never meet this great duty simply by asking that it may be done. There is a cross to be taken up before we can enjoy the fruition of our hope and faith.” Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, page 9

I heard a comment this week, that prayer is just another form of thinking words. This gave me pause. Right in our lesson we read this week, “The test of all prayer lies in the answer to these questions…” It is clear that true prayer is more than thinking words and requires action, demonstration, “There is a cross to be taken up…” It made me appreciate more the work that is done here to train people to give evidence of their learning and prayers. Purpose in living the Science of Christ with pure hearts. It gave me pause to make sure that my prayers are more than just “thinking words” so that others will be drawn to the clarity and difference that is found in the living Truth and desire to live this Science also. We owe a debt of gratitude to Mary Baker Eddy for her chapter on “Prayer” in Science and Health (Click on words to listen and read.)
