Two Great Lights

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

Gen. 1:16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1 is treasured by me due to “God the Only Cause and Creator” as I’ve learned in Christian Science. In Strong’s Concordance the “two great lights” of Gen. 1:16 translates as “luminaries” whereas all the other usage of “light” in Gen. 1 is “illumination.” In “The Destiny of the Mother Church,” in the chapters “The Woman,” “How Divinity Reaches Humanity,” and “Prophesy,” Bliss Knapp using Bible verses (such as Micah 5:2,3) and quoting from Mary Baker Eddy’s writings neatly unfolds the prophesy of the “two great lights” as given to us by God to rule us through Christian Science:)

Thank you for this beautiful Lesson!!

Micah 5:2 But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.

3 Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel.
