Weep Sore

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

After Hezekiah was told that he was going to die, he turned from the material senses (turned his face to the wall) and wept sore. It was right after that that Isaiah told Hezekiah that he had 15 more years to live.

I read somewhere recently the question, “Is it ok for men to cry?” As I read this I thought how we are programmed to ignore our spiritual senses and follow such worldly beliefs and superstitions that lead us into unhealthy behavior, like refusing to cry or otherwise becoming so consumed with human appearance and with what others think about us.

Not only is it ok for men to cry, it is essential to their health. Crying is a cleansing moment. When the poison of human grief or tragedy affects us, it is healthy to cry and cleanse ourselves, – especially when the crying is for others and not just selfish. In the case of Hezekiah, he felt a strong desire to serve God and the people of Israel. His was not just a selfish desire. In this case, crying is not a sign of weakness, but of strength, for it washes away the false human beliefs and opens the heart to the renewal of God’s grace.
