…whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

    7. Colossians 3 : 23, 24
    23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
    24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.

    The definition of “heartily” from the Webster’s 1828:

    HE’ARTILY, adverb [from hearty.] From the heart; with all the heart; with sincerity; really.
    1. With zeal; actively; vigorously
    2. Eagerly; freely; largely;

    This brought to me the following examples…

    From the readings given on Wednesday, November 7th, 2018:
    Mark 12
    29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
    30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

    From the July 29th, 2018 lesson, and the editions of Love is the Liberator that covered these topics:
    5. Matthew 10 : 8
    8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.

    From Message for 1900 by Mary Baker Eddy, page 2:
    The song of Christian Science is, “Work – work – work – watch and pray.”

    From Mary Baker Eddy, Her Spiritual Precepts, by Gilbert Carpenter, volume IV, page 496:
    Mrs. Eddy wanted the work to be done scientifically, and one salient point in all work is the knowledge that in Science there is no middle ground. One’s mental work either tears down or builds up, or it makes nothing of it, and so tears it down. There is no point at which the thinking of students is void. If it is human, it is expressed in human results; if it is divine, it is made manifest in good results.

    In looking for hallmarks of those “human results” the Merriam-Webster website had these antonyms of heartily: “bleakly, cheerlessly, darkly, heavily, miserably, morosely, unhappily.” These qualities exemplified my old life, and I am so grateful to God that they are behind me!

    How wonderful that Christian Science brings purpose, joy, and “gives one plenty of employment” (Mis. p. 118) for me to do heartily! Thank you so much for this lesson, and all that this church offers.
