you are the custodian of such vast power

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

This week’s daily watch starts with:

498 — WATCH that you realize that you are a terror to error, that your consciousness of God is so effective and powerful, and you are the custodian of such vast power, that the moment you apply it, it does things, it dissipates error and leaves the infinite good filling all space.

I realized the need to look up “custodian” as this is what a lot of the schools I went to called their janitors. The word itself was not in the 1828 Webster’s, so I looked to “custody” and found this:

CUSTODY, noun [Latin , a watchman, a keeper. See Chaste.]
    1. A keeping; a guarding; care, watch, inspection, for keeping, preservation or security.

Understanding the meaning behind this daily watch better, it is yet another reminder how that power which Stephen and Phillip demonstrated in this week’s lesson is not unique to them, but available to me and all, as it comes straight from God. How much better to be “the custodian of such vast power” than to remain the keeper of error, which when applied did nothing but make me useless, insecure, and miserable!

I am very grateful to Christian Science and this church for showing me how to get my thought right so I might be useful to God and bless others.

Thank you for this week’s lesson and this watch!

You bring up such a great point, Jeremy! Before I came to Plainfield, even having grown up in C.S., I had NO idea that I had to actually DO something: make an effort, study, be active, have a backbone…basically, step up to the plate in order to as you say, “be useful to God and bless others”. I was doing little more than hoping all good would magically fall upon my head. How wonderful to have these precious writings from the early workers on our website for all to benefit from. What a revelation!
