The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

Although I am not a dairy farmer I am close friends with one who has a very small herd of cows and allows all of her animals to live as nature intended. The baby calves are allowed to stay with their moms, families are kept together, they live in harmony, are incredibly healthy and beautiful, and raised completely on rotating pastures. The cows live long lives. The babies are weaned after several months. When the milk runs out, there is no more cheese. The beauty of this farming practice, the way nature intended, is breathtaking. This farmer makes a decent living.

After studying the current paradigm of the conventional dairy “industry”–with the terrible harm it does to animals and to the land, the cruel abuse that takes place in the larger dairies, the ripping of babies from their moms, the killing of the male babies, and tragically for the hard-working farmers, a lack of profits–I’ve come to the conclusion that it can never work well because this paradigm includes the breaking of the commandment “thou shalt not steal”: in large money-driven dairies especially, it is apparently common practice to steal babies from the moms as early as day one.

Surely this cruel practice (which also breaks the Golden Rule) cannot be something that blesses. I believe “thou shalt not steal” would best be applied in every industry, and wouldn’t the world be a better place for it?
