Believe, Have Faith

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

Such an inspiring Lesson! Jesus had just come from the Transfiguration with Peter, James and John, and was returning to the other 9 disciples. He obviously was in a very uplifted state of mind, so when the father said to him, “…if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us,” Jesus responded, “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.”

When the punctuation in this translation is changed to read: “If you can?” (emphasis upon the word IF) “Believe.” (a command) “All things are possible to him that believeth,” then it becomes a much stronger command to the father, and to the disciples…and to us.

It is such an important lesson here is to believe, to have faith, that God can do anything. This is the “prayer (the affirmation) and fasting (from doubt?)” that Jesus required. Mrs. Eddy lists faith as one of the transitional qualities in the 2nd Degree (S&H p. 115, Scientific Translation of Mortal Mind), and thus, a very necessary step in order to progress to Understanding (3rd Degree).
