…in the way of God's appointing

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

    6. 326 : 3-14
If we wish to follow Christ, Truth, it must be in the way of God’s appointing.

    5. Acts 9
10 And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision,
11 …Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus:
13 …Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:
15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:
17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

When I first read this part of the story, quite a while ago, I thought “What is up with this guy talking back to the Lord?” But this time, I realized that Ananias was using his spiritual sense and conforming to what would later be written by Paul: “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:21)

    As Mrs. Eddy wrote:

    1. 223
Spiritual rationality and free thought accompany approaching Science, and cannot be put down.

If Ananias blindly followed, then that would not have been good. Things may have gone much differently if Ananias had shown up and said, “I’m not sure why, but I felt I needed to find you, Saul.” It took understanding to make this demonstration. Because Ananias used his spiritual sense from the beginning, he knew just what to say to Saul once they met, and Saul’s sight was restored and he was set on his new God-directed path.

I am very grateful that Christian Science, as I am learning in Plainfield, is showing me how to be in the right Mind, and to be useful “in the way of God’s appointing.” I am also grateful how these Bible Lessons show the long lasting effects learning to demonstrate can have. Thank you!
