In one of Mrs. Eddy’s Bibles, she wrote beside Romans 12: “Romans 12 is Christian Science” (MBE Accession #B00017.C).
Romans 12:2: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
“Conformed” (Strong’s #4964) in Greek is “syschematizo” and means “to conform oneself (one’s mind and character) to another’s pattern, to fashion oneself according to” (BlueLetterBible.org).
“Transformed” (Strong’s #3339) in Greek is “metamorphoo” and means “to change into another form, to transfigure, i.e. Christ’s appearance was changed and was resplendent with a divine brightness on the mount of transfiguration; we are transformed into the same image (of consummate excellence that shines in Christ); reproduce the same image” (BlueLetterBible.org).
“Renewing” (Strong’s #342) in Greek is “anakainosis” and means “a change of heart and life; a new development; a renewal achieved by God’s power”; and, “a renewal, renovation, complete change for the better” (BlueLetterBible.org).
“Acceptable” – “That which will be pleasing to God, or which He will approve. There is scarcely a more difficult text in the Bible than this, or one that is more full of meaning. It involves the main duty of religion to be separated from the world; and expresses the way in which that duty may be performed, and in which we may live so as to ascertain and do the will of God. If all Christians would obey this, religion would be everywhere honored. If all would separate from the vices and follies, the amusements and gaieties of the world, Christ would be glorified. If all were truly renewed in their minds, they would lose their relish for such things, and seeking only to do the will of God, they would not be slow to find it” (Barnes Commentary).
“Perfect” – “free from defect, stain, or injury. That which has all its parts complete, or which is not disproportionate” (Barnes Commentary – BibleHub.com).
“Do no follow the fashions and customs of the worldly society around you, but let your ways of thinking be so changed by the Holy Spirit that you look for and recognize God’s will, and love to do it” (Dummelow).
