Semi-metaphysical systems

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

“In this final struggle for supremacy, semi-metaphysical systems afford no substantial aid to scientific metaphysics, for their arguments are based on the false testimony of the material senses as well as on the facts of Mind. These semi-metaphysical systems are one and all pantheistic, and savor of Pandemonium, a house divided against itself.” (S&H 268:14)

“Semi” means half, and in S&H, it states that “Mind-science is wholly separate from any half-way impertinent knowledge….” (103:12) Then on page 167:22, “It is not wise to take a halting and half-way position or to expect to work equally with Spirit and matter, Truth and error.” And again on page 274:23, “Divine Science is absolute, and permits no half-way position in learning its Principle and rule — establishing it by demonstration.”

So what are the half-way measures that I may be tempted to take? Perhaps resorting to a little human will to resolve a situation; maybe a little acquiescence to doubt that God is not in control of a situation; a little dependence upon a material remedy to ease a pain; or indulging in a little impatience or resentment when I believe I’ve been wronged; and the list goes on….

It’s all impertinent, where Webster defines impertinent as: “of no weight; having no bearing on the subject; rude; intrusive; trifling; foolish.” But worse than all that, it leads to Pandemonium, defined as “the abode of all demons.”

This is such a powerful Lesson-Sermon! And many years ago our teacher, Mrs. Evans, taught us to know that this Lesson on animal magnetism goes forth with all the power of God, and there cannot be any opposition to it.
