Spiritual Teaching by Symbols

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

575:13, “Spiritual teaching must always be by symbols.” I am reminded of a precious memory shared by Calvin Hill that related to a heart symbol. Mrs Eddy told him that one night when she was waiting on God for a message regarding a problem, she took up a some papers held together by a rubber band. She put the rubber band on her wrist while looking through the documents. Later, while praying and pacing the floor, she tossed the rubber band on her chest of drawers. It fell in the exact shape of a heart. In that trying moment, the heart symbolized the great heart of God, “the ever presence of ministering Love” (S&H, p.567) She was comforted that God had guided her to the right decision, His plan would prevail. She sat down and wrote a poem Signs of the Heart.

Because of this week’s Bible lesson, I will be more determined to discern spiritual teachings by symbols. Thanks again for helping me to grow!
