First Commandment

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

    “15 Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves;
    16 Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image,…” Deuteronomy 4

    “When we endow matter with vague spiritual power, — that is, when we do so in our theories, for of course we cannot really endow matter with what it does not and cannot possess, — we disown the Almighty,…” by Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health page 119

    From Websters 1828 –
    Disown: To deny; not to own; to refuse to acknowledge as belonging to ones self.
    Deny: To contradict; to declare not to be true

    This combination of citations this week made me appreciate more the practical teachings at Plainfield Independent Church on following the First Commandment. Seeing another power other than God is not just indulging in harmless fear but disowning God, denying Him. Last Saturday in our Bible study on the book of Jude, one warning which “crept in unawares” was denying God and Christ Jesus. (Jude 1: 4)

    “39 Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the Lord he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.” Deuteronomy 4
