Watching from the Summit of the "Science of Life"

The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

“A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” Let us watch, work, and pray … that this light be not hid, but radiate and glow into noontide glory. (SH 487:27.)

The all-encompassing closing words of Mrs. Eddy’s unpublished sermon, “The Science of Life,” circa 1879, are not only inspired, but also make for an excellent watch to help wake up a world in needless turmoil:

The Revelator on the isle of Patmos, privileged to be exiled from mortal conceptions of Life and spared the illusions of sense, beheld through the illumination of Soul the seven seals of error opened. And mortal mind and the beliefs of matter, in their corresponding figures of reptile and beast, passed in review before him.

To his quickened sense the hideous forms of malice, hatred and lies were unveiled. The crowned beasts of appetite and passion, — the seven-headed serpents of envy, hatred and lies; hypocrisy with the head of a dragon and the face of a lamb, the Jerusalem that killed the prophets that suffocated the breath of Science with the beliefs of sense — all rose up before the Revelator out of the sea of mortal mind (but only to appear and disappear when materiality was destroyed and there was no more sea).

Methinks none but the scientific John, whom the boiling oil harmed not, could have borne that view. One thing is certain, none but he could have reached it: his spiritual sense was refreshed by an angel coming from heaven a message from Soul quickly pouring truth into the seething sea of the senses and holding in the right hand a little book that was sealed; its meaning was hidden from personal sense.

And the angel, the soft-winged message from Soul, cried, “Who is worthy to open the book?” Who hath reached the spiritual perception of Life, Truth, and Love? Then the Spirit uttered its voices and all was revealed. And the spiritual sense of life brought out the Science of life and destroyed the belief of life, substance or Intelligence in matter; and the evidences of the material senses yielded to the evidences of the spiritual senses.

Then the beasts bowed before the Lamb, knelt at the feet of purity and innocence; and the dragon and his angels were chained and cast into the bottomless pit; hatred and lies were disarmed and destroyed forever.

Then there came down from heaven the new Jerusalem; the supremacy of Spirit and the reign of harmony appeared in their might, majesty, and loveliness.

And paeans of praise ascribed all power, riches, wisdom, strength, honor, glory, and blessings to God, to Spirit enthroned forever; and the crystal river, the pure waters of Life, flowed on; and the tree of Life yielded her fruits for the healing of the nations.

And the Revelator saw there should be no more curse: no sickness, sin, or death, no more sorrowing or sighing; all tears should be wiped away, for no night is there, and the glory of His presence, the radiance of Divine Life, Truth and Love shall illumine and govern Life in Science.
