Worthwhile Suffering?

The Forum is dedicated to each week's lesson, and may be used to post questions, comments, and constructive replies that strive to uncover the inspired meaning of the text. The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible; make two short postings of the long posts or send the lengthy ones for publication in our Magazine or Newsletter. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

SH 266 “The pains of sense are salutary, if they wrench away false pleasurable beliefs and transplant the affections from sense to Soul, where the creations of God are good, “rejoicing the heart.” Such is the sword of Science, with which Truth decapitates error, materiality giving place to man’s higher individuality and destiny.” (Emphasis added)

This is something that has fostered spiritual growth; if the disappointments from leaning on material things and trusting them were not experienced, I would still be looking at them and expecting my happiness etc. from them. Some of the lessons have been sharp, but all worthwhile; since the pains are also healed, when the more permanent truths I can depend on and trust fill the spaces. Love never leaves us comfortless!

Thank you for this post which I can totally relate to. I definitely think the suffering is worthwhile because there’s nothing more gratifying than spiritual growth. There’s no looking back when materiality is “giving place to man’s higher individuality and destiny”!
