The Bulletin Board is for gratitude for Christian Science and the Church, as well as timely excerpts from the Bible, the works of Mrs. Eddy, and the early workers that help and encourage. We are very grateful for all posts that conform to these guidelines, but will edit or remove anything that the Practitioners feel is not in complete accord with pure Christian Science or in any way disrespectful of it.

We also ask that you keep your postings as concise as possible. If you quote the Bible, please use The King James Version, as this is what Mrs. Eddy used. Thank you!

We listened again to this beautiful prayer in song. Some of what most caught our attention was, oh spirit send a revival to this nation, restore the church that bears your name, and so much more. It truly is a beautiful prayer and song.
    Thank you.

Thank you so much for your reference to the testimony in “A Century of Christian Science Healing.” Thanks too for including the page number, as it’s not an easy book to find a specific testimony in. We had read it before but are grateful to be reacquainted with it!

Helpful post, thank you. I especially appreciate the idea of the Sabbath as a gift. I see I’ve been thinking of it as a restriction.

To hear and see on You Tube Faith, Jared, and Bruce very humbly and sweetly support and sing with Faith’s child was a beautiful thing.

I was not aware that there was a Roundtable page, another treasure to mine on the Plainfield site.

Perhaps this wasn’t a good time for the above post. Sunday’s Roundtable was outstanding. Church members and teachers are clearly rising to the occasion of the present world challenges.

Thank you. I can’t seem to be reminded too often of the Wilcox quote, “the ‘objects of sense’ when correctly understood, are really ‘ideas of Soul.'”

More from the same book: “All through the class the spiritual teachings of the Scriptures were emphasized, and she [Mrs. Eddy] said: ‘Every word in the Bible is capable of spiritual interpretation.’”

The description above referring to the Messiah, though the challenges took different forms, could be used to describe what was required of Mrs. Eddy’s life work as well.

How embarrassing, I spent all day editing responses to the above post thinking it was addressing me and it’s not. It’s addressing the church. I must become a more careful reader.

I am reminded of a time when I used Mrs. Eddy’s statement from Science and Health, “…Truth and error are irreconcilable.” To justify leaving a husband (at his request) rather too willingly. In that case there was too much self-righteousness and human will involved on my part to be the least bit scientific, or loving.

I guess I am reminded of this, because it seems that its one thing to know the rules and another to know how and when they apply.

As a follow-up to Michael’s first post for those who have access to it I found the following treasure trove:
    CHRISTIAN SCIENCE BIBLE LESSONS
    (International Series.)
    F. E. MASON C.S.B.
From the September 1889 issue of The Christian Science Journal
Lesson No. 9, … David and Goliath.
Lesson No. 10. … David and Jonathan.
Lesson No. 11. … David Sparing Saul.
Lesson No. 12. … Death of Saul and his sons.
Our source was JSH-Online to which we subscribe for such occasions. Clearly we’ve been missing a lot.
Thank you Michael for both helpful posts and the information about “Arkpublication.”

Your post reminds me that, “The Scriptures are very sacred. Our aim must be to have them understood spiritually, for only by this understanding can truth be gained.” (Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy)
Thank you Michael. I didn’t know the old Journals included anything so exhaustive. Will get back to it now looking for that sacredness.

This statement from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (page 4) ties in with the above and fits so well with this weeks lesson, “Outward worship is not of itself sufficient to express loyal and heartfelt gratitude, since he has said: ‘If ye love me, keep my commandments.’” She begins the paragraph with her statement about “patience, meekness, love, and good deeds.” Now there’s some good preparation for participation in church activities, really is church activity, not to mention making our daily lives more divine.

Such an important idea. Thank you Bruce. It brings to mind the following from Miscellany by Mrs. Eddy, “Thus may each member of this church rise above the oft-repeated inquiry, What am I? to the scientific response: I am able to impart truth, health, and happiness, and this is my rock of salvation and my reason for existing.”

To follow up, I guess I’m not quite sure what parts of the Church Manual Plainfield church feels they must follow and which not. Naturally since Plainfield is not a branch none of it strictly applies. Plainfield does encourage following the daily duties from it. Considering the importance given the Manual by Mrs. Eddy I wondered what she might say about Christmas. I didn”t find anything forbiding even branch churches from having Christmas or Christmas eve services, just the no Easter observances etc. rule for Mother Church members in the United States.

Thank you for your post, Michael. How true it is that nothing is gained by selfishness. Among other things on the subject, Mrs. Eddy wrote, “A wrong motive involves defeat.” (Science and Health, p. 446) Joseph must have been motivated by great love not only for God but for man.
